Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus was a Roman politician, senator and son-in-law of the emperor Marcus Aurelius .

Pompeianus came from Antioch in Syria and was the son of a knight named Claudius Quintianus. Pompeianus' civil servant career before his first (suffect) consulate is unknown. By military diplomas that are dated to August 23, 162, is evidence that he along with 162 Tiberius Claudius Paullinus Suffektkonsul was. Thereafter, probably from 164 to about 167, he was legate of Lower Pannonia ; he is attested as governor by two diplomas, one of which is dated May 5, 167. Since the Emperor Mark Aurel very soon used him as his closest military advisor, which did not change until Mark Aurel's life, Pompeianus must have proven his military skills even before taking over the governorship in Lower Pannonia.

After the death of Lucius Verus in 169 Pompeianus married his widow Lucilla , the daughter of Marcus Aurelius. In 173 Pompeianus became a full consul . As Chief of Staff of Mark Aurel during the Marcomann War, Pompeianus led the empire on the Danube.

The new Emperor Commodus did not follow his advice to continue the Marcomann War . Despite the execution of Lucilla and his relative (nephew?) Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus Quintianus , who had planned an assassination attempt on Commodus, the emperor spared Pompeianus. After the death of Commodus, Pompeianus refused the offer of imperial dignity, as did the joint rule offered to him by Didius Iulianus .
