Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus Quintianus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus Quintianus was a member of the Roman upper class who participated in a conspiracy against Emperor Commodus in 181 or 182 .

Quintianus was married to Aurelia, the daughter of Commodus' sister Lucilla from her marriage to the Emperor Lucius Verus . After Cassius Dio , he also had an intimate relationship with Lucilla. Quintianus was probably a nephew of the general and son-in-law of Mark Aurel , Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus . Through his marriage he was definitely a member of the imperial family. Up until the assassination, Quintianus belonged to the inner circle around Commodus, whose drinking companion and companion on youthful escapades he was. Quintianus' son was Lucius Aurellius Commodus Pompeianus .

In 181 or 182, Lucilla, Quintianus, Ummidius Quadratus and others conspired to assassinate Commodus. According to the literary sources, Lucilla is said to have been the leading force. According to Herodian , after the marriage of Commodus with Bruttia Crispina , Lucilla was afraid of her position as Augusta and therefore wanted to have her brother murdered.

The reports on the assassination are very consistent in the sources: When Commodus was on his way to the amphitheater , Quintianus, instead of immediately stabbing him, rushed at him with the cry: "The Senate has sent you this". In doing so, he gave the guards the opportunity to overpower him and save the emperor's life. Quintianus and Ummidius Quadratus were then executed. Lucilla was first banished and later also executed.
