Flavius Caesarius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flavius Caesarius was a late 4th century Roman politician.

Flavius Caesarius, about whose youth, date of birth and place of birth nothing is known, was the son of Palladius Rutilius Taurus Aemilianus . According to his career, he was probably born in the 1st half of the 4th century. Under the emperors Julian and Valens he entered the imperial service and held various provincial offices.

Under Emperor Theodosius , who gave Flavius Caesarius the important court office of magister officiorum , which he exercised from 387 to 389, his influence on the imperial government grew. This is already evident from the fact that in 387 he succeeded in obtaining a pardon from Theodosius for the rebellious inhabitants of the city of Antioch . From 395 to 398 he was praefectus praetorio orientis . During this time he was appointed full consul for 397 .

In 399 Flavius Caesarius was involved in the overthrow of the eunuch Eutropius , who held the consulate that year and was the closest advisor to the young emperor Arcadius . From then on, Flavius Caesarius was the chief adviser to Arcadius. His Teutonic policy and his Arian convictions finally led to his overthrow at the end of 401. In contrast to Eutropius, however, he was not executed, but pardoned at the request of his brother Flavius Aurelianus , the consul of 400.
