Marcus Aufidius Fronto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcus Aufidius Fronto was a Roman politician and senator in the early 3rd century.

Fronto came from Pisaurum in Umbria . His father was Gaius Aufidius Victorinus , consul 155 and 183. Fronto became ordinary consul in 199 together with Publius Cornelius Anullinus .

According to Cassius Dios , Fronto was assigned the province of Africa for the year 217/18 . However, since the Africans protested against him, Macrinus had chosen him for Asia . Apparently he was supposed to take over this province in the following year in office, but that didn't happen either. Fronto did not accept the fee of one million sesterces because, according to his statement, he was concerned with the proconsulate , but not with the money. Later he received the province from Emperor Elagabal . A new inscription from Formia confirmed the assumption that it was Asia. He probably exercised the governorship in 219/200, that is, in the first year in which Elagabal was able to redress the injustice committed by his predecessor.

His brother was Gaius Aufidius Victorinus , consul in 200.
