Gaius Aufidius Victorinus (Consul 183)
Gaius Aufidius Victorinus († approx. 185) was a high-ranking Roman politician and senator of the 2nd century.
His full name was Gaius Aufidius Victorinus Mulvius ... Marcellinus Rhesius Per ... ... Numisius Rufus Arrius Paul (inus?) ... (? Camil) lus Iustus Cocceius Gallus . Victorinus came from Pisaurum in Umbria . Together with Marcus Aurelius, he was a student of Marcus Cornelius Fronto and later married Fronto's daughter Gratia.
In 155 Victorinus became a suffect consul , then from 162 to 166 he became a legate of Germania superior , where he was given the task of refusing the chat incursion into Germania and Raetia . In 166/7 he was probably comes from Mark Aurel and Lucius Verus in the Marcomann War , where he received high military awards. A year later Victorinus became a legate of Dacia (168/9), then of Hispania Baetica (probably 170/1) and of Hispania citerior (about 171/2). After that Victorinus held the proconsulate of Africa (around 173/5) and was governor of Syria between 177 and 179 . After his city prefecture , probably 179 to 183, Victorinus 183 became consul again together with Commodus .
Victorinus was still in high regard at the beginning of the reign of Commodus, but one can infer from a statement by Cassius Dios that Commodus sought the consular's life soon afterwards, probably at the instigation of the powerful Praetorian prefect Tigidius Perennis. Victorinus died around 185. His sons were Marcus Aufidius Fronto and Gaius Aufidius Victorinus , full consuls in 199 and 200, respectively.
