Gaius Silius (Consul 13)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Silius († 24 ) was a Roman politician and senator .

Silius was probably a son of Publius Silius Nerva , who lived in 20 BC. Chr. Suffektkonsul had been. His wife was Sosia Galla. His son was Gaius Silius , who married Valeria Messalina , wife of Emperor Claudius .

Silius was close friends with Germanicus . In the year 13 Silius became a full consul . He was then appointed Commander in Chief of the Upper German Army in 14 and received the triumphal insignia in 15 due to his successes there . In the following years he successfully operated in this area under the command of Germanicus. It is not entirely clear which title he held. Tacitus calls him a moderator .

In 18, Silius was commissioned to build a fleet. A campaign against the Chatti was only successful after two years. In the year 21, Silius put down the Sacrovir uprising. The son of his predecessor as commander in this war, Lucius Visellius Varro , full consul of the year 24, was therefore hostile to him and charged him with extortion during his consulate. Silius evaded the threat of suicide. Much of his property was confiscated.

Remarks

  1. Aulus Caecina Largus is not part of its name as assumed ( CIL 10, 6639 , missing suf. ). A newly found inscription from Tusculum proves that Caecina Largus had been a suffect consul; Munat (ius) Plan (cus) C (aius) S [ilius] / suf (fectus) Caecina .
