Gaius Caristanius Fronto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Caristanius Fronto was a Roman politician and senator of the 1st century AD.

He came, probably in the fourth generation, from a family that had settled under Augustus in the newly founded colonia of Antioch ad Pisidiam . He initially held chivalric functions, but was then accepted into the Senate by Vespasian as the first ( homo novus ) of his family. In 74/75 or 75/76 he was a legate in the province of Pontus et Bithynia . From around 76 to 79 he commanded the legio IX Hispana stationed in Britain . In the first years of Domitian's rule , around 81/82 to 83/84, Fronto was governor of Lycia et Pamphylia , where he received numerous honors. In 90 he reached the suffect consulate .

His wife was Calpurnia Paulla, daughter of a Calpurnius Longo. His sons were Gaius Caristanius Fronto and Gaius Caristanius Paulinus, whose senatorial careers are almost completely unknown.
