Publius Servilius Geminus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publius Servilius Geminus came from the Roman family of the Servilians and was 252 BC. BC and 248 BC Chr. Consul .

Life

Publius Servilius Geminus was, according to the Fasti Capitolini, the son of an unknown Quintus Servilius and grandson of a Gnaeus Servilius . He had a twin brother Quintus Servilius , who looked similar to him but was otherwise unknown , and was therefore given the cognomen Geminus (= "twin") and in this way was the progenitor of the Servilii Gemini family branch .

During the First Punic War , Geminus came in 252 and 248 BC. BC to the highest office of the state, with Gaius Aurelius Cotta as a colleague on both occasions . The Greek historian Polybius , who gives an outline of the history of the first war between Rome and Carthage , does not mention the military achievements of the consuls at all; according to Zonaras , the epitomator of the imperial historian Cassius Dio , during both terms of office it fell to them to fight together against the Punians in Sicily , but details are only given of Cotta's war acts.

Geminus' son was probably Gaius Servilius Geminus , who at the beginning of the Second Punic War (218 BC) was taken prisoner by the Boier , from which he was only freed 15 years later by his son of the same name .
