Aulus Caecina Alienus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aulus Caecina Alienus (* in Vicentia ; † around 79 in Rome ) was a Roman politician and military man in the 1st century AD.

Caecina came from Vicentia . In 68 he was treasurer in the Baetica . He was appointed legionary legate by Emperor Galba . But when it was learned that Caecina had put public funds on the side, Galba charged him with embezzling state property. At the end of 68 / beginning of 69, Caecina, as a legate of legio IV Macedonica, helped in the elevation of Vitellius , from whom he received command of all troops in Upper Germany , which he led to Upper Italy. Caecina defeated the Helvetii and came to Verona to occupy the Po Valley. At Bedriacum the united Vitellians won the decisive battle on April 14, 69 against Otho .

In Lugdunum and soon in Rome Vitellius bestowed awards on Caecina. In September 68 he was appointed suffect consul with Fabius Valens . But after the defeat and death of Fabius Valens against Vespasian , Caecina had to give up his post on October 30, one day before his consulate expired. Vitellius blamed him for the defeat and replaced him with his confidante Rosius Regulus .

Vitellius nevertheless appointed Caecina commander in chief of the army against the Flavians. While trying to bring the army to Vespasian, Caecina was captured by his soldiers. After the Battle of Cremona Caecina was sent to Vespasian by Mark Antony Primus , legate of legio VII Galbiana , who received Caecina kindly. Even so, around 79 Caecina participated in a conspiracy against Vespasian. His son Titus then had him executed.
