Nar. Manlius Boethius was a 5th century Roman politician. He was a senator and held high offices.

Surname

The name of Boethius is in the form of Nar on his consular diptych . Manl (ius) Boethius narrated. On two inscriptions from Asia Minor , the name is Fl (avius) Boethius . The resolution of the acronym Nar. is unclear. It used to be assumed that it was a contraction of the initials of two names: N (onius) Ar (rius) . Two other possibilities are being considered in recent research: Narius , a Roman name that has also been passed down elsewhere, but which is no longer attested after the early 3rd century, and Marius , a common name, although it must be assumed that the scribe was mistaken .

Life

Boethius was probably the son of a Boethius who was the Praetorian Prefect of Italy and was appointed by Emperor Valentinian III in 454 . was killed. The beginning of his career is unknown. After being Prefect of Rome for the first time , he became Praetorian Prefect of Italy between 480 and 486. In 487 he was an ordinary consul without colleagues and in the same year again city prefect of Rome. He was called Patricius .

Boethius died soon after 487 because his son, the philosopher Boethius , who was born around 480/485, grew up without a father.
