Lucius Vipstanus Poplicola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucius Vipstanus Poplicola was a Roman politician and senator .

Poplicola was a son of Marcus Vipstanus Gallus, who had been a suffect consul in the year 18 . In 46 Poplicola was an extraordinary magistrate in Cales in Campania . Under Emperor Claudius he was raised to the patrician class. In 48 Poplicola held the ordinary consulate together with the later emperor Aulus Vitellius . During his consulate, Poplicola applied to name Emperor Claudius father of the Senate , since the title father of the fatherland ( Pater patriae ) had been worn out. "New services to the state have to be marked with names that are not yet in use." But Claudius put Poplicola in his place, who spoke too much to his mouth. In the 58/59 year of office, Poplicola finally became proconsul of the province of Asia .

His brother was Messalla Vipstanus Gallus , who followed him as a suffect consul in office.
