Lofthus
Lofthus is a settlement with about 565 inhabitants within the municipality of Ullensvang in the Norwegian Fylke Vestland . It is located in the touristically important region of Hardanger .
geography
Lofthus is located on the Sørfjord (Hardanger) , a 38 km long southern branch of the Hardangerfjord . The place borders in the east on the Hardangervidda National Park , Europe's largest mountain plateau (highest point, Haarteigen , 1690 m ).
Economy and culture
Lofthus is the Norwegian capital of sweet cherries . The cherry festival is held annually in summer, where the Norwegian championship in cherry stone spitting is held (record: 14.24 m, S. Kleivkaas). Furthermore, apples and plums are grown in the region around Lofthus. Tourism is also an important economic factor.
Attractions
Edvard Grieg spent many summers in Lofthus and stayed in the Hotel Ullensvang, which still exists today. Grieg found inspiration for his work in the nature of the Hardanger region. In order to be able to compose undisturbed, he had a so-called composer's hut built, which can be viewed in the hotel's garden.
Other attractions in the region are the medieval churches (built around 1300) and various waterfalls as well as the flowering season in May.
Leisure and Tourism
From Lofthus there are good hiking opportunities to the nearby Hardangervidda waterfalls. In summer there is a rich cultural offer. Several hotels and a campsite offer overnight accommodation.
