Gaius Norbanus (the cognomen Balbus is very uncertain; † 82/81 BC in Rhodes ) was a Roman politician of the late republic .

Norbanus came from Norba and was the first of his family ( homo novus ) to take up the official career ( cursus honorum ) . Norbanus is counted among the popular and was a follower of Lucius Appuleius Saturninus . 103 BC BC he successfully accused Quintus Servilius Caepio as a tribune of the people because of the defeat against the Cimbri at Arausio . Probably 101 BC He was Quaestor in Cilicia under Mark Antony (in reverse of the usual order) . 94 BC Antony defended him against an indictment of maiestas - violation in the indictment against Caepio. In the process, Norbanus was acquitted. As praetor during the alliance war and afterwards (probably 89 BC and as propaetor in the following year or years) Norbanus was governor of Sicily.

As consul in 83 BC He faced Sulla , who had landed in Italy , but was defeated on Mount Tifata and withdrew to Capua , where he was able to stay for a while. As proconsul in the following year, Norbanus suffered a defeat at Faventia in northern Italy against Sulla's sub-general Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius . His legacy Albinovanus then went over to Metellus. Norbanus escaped and got to Rhodes , where he committed suicide as a proscribed .
