Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaeanus
Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaeanus (* approx. 45; † before 120) was a politician and senator during the Roman Empire .
Celsus came from a knightly family , probably from Sardis , and made a very steep career as a soldier and official. As a tribune of Legio III Cyrenaica (approx. 68/69) he joined the new Emperor Vespasian in Alexandria , who rewarded Celsus with the adlectio inter aedilicios (admission to the Senate in the rank of the former aediles ). Brought to Rome by Vespasian, he became praetor . Emperor Titus appointed him legate of Legio IV Scythica in Syria in 80 ; then Celsus was proconsul of the province of Pontus et Bithynia in the year of office 84/85 , and about 89-91 legate of the province of Cilicia .
In 92 Celsus was together with Lucius Stertinius Avitus suffect consul , then curator of the public buildings (approx. 93-95) and 106/07 proconsul of the province of Asia . Celsus was a member of the Quindecimviri sacris faciundis priests college .
After his death, his son Tiberius Iulius Aquila Polemaeanus built the Celsus library in Ephesus around 120 , in which Celsus was buried.
