from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus († around 55 BC ) was a Roman senator , military man and politician.

Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus belonged to the Lentuli branch of the Cornelier family . In the year 76 or 75 BC Marcellinus was - probably in Spain - mint master and quaestor . A 76 or 75 BC BC denarius minted in his name is said to have been minted in an army mint and not in Rome. 68 BC He was possibly tribune of the people . The following year he took part in the pirate war under Pompey as legatus pro praetore . When he acted off the coast of Africa, he became patron saint of Cyrene . 60 BC He became praetor and was then 59 and 58 BC. Chr. Propraetor in Syria .

In 56 BC Lentulus was consul with Lucius Marcius Philippus . During this time he promoted the aspiring Marcus Tullius Cicero . He stood in opposition to Publius Clodius Pulcher , which was particularly evident in 61 BC. And came to fruition in his consulate year. Marcellinus was the spokesman for the Optimates and tried to fight the members of the first triumvirate , Gaius Iulius Caesar , Pompey and Marcus Licinius Crassus . After his consulate he withdrew from politics. He died shortly afterwards.

Marcellinus was a member of the priestly college of the septemviri epulonum . He himself or a son was probably married to Scribonia , who would later become the second wife of the future emperor Augustus .
