Licinianus Licinius

Valerius Licinianus Licinius or Licinius II (* around 315; † around 326), the son of the emperor of the same name , was nominally under-emperor in the east of the Roman Empire from 317 to 324 .
The emperor's son was probably born in 315, maybe in July or August. His father Licinius was Augustus of the East at that time . His mother was probably Constantia , a half-sister of Constantine the Great , who ruled the western part of the Roman Empire. His father had him teach from the famous grammarian Flavius Optatus .
On March 1, 317 his father appointed him Caesar (lower emperor) in the east. In 319 he held the consulate ; In 321 his father appointed him consul once more, but this was not recognized by Constantine. After a bloody struggle for sole rule, his father finally succumbed to Constantine in 324 and was executed a year later. The son was initially spared, but probably also killed in 326, possibly in the context of the execution of Constantine's son Crispus.
Other sources report that Constantine had a son of Licinius flogged and enslaved. When he fled, he was captured and forced to work in the Carthage weaving mill, where he is attested in 336. Constantine finally had him executed. These communications are related to another son of Licinius by a slave girl.

- ↑ Cf. for example Eutropius 10,6,3, where Licinianus Licinius is referred to as Constantine's “sister's son” ( sororis filium ). However, Codex Theodosianus 4,6,2 could indicate that Constantia Licinianus only adopted, as Otto Seeck assumed.
