Life
Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, whose father and grandfather, according to the Fasti Capitolini, used the prenomen Gaius , probably originally came from the little-known gene Caesonia and through adoption became a member of the more important plebeian family of the Calpurnians . Perhaps his adoptive father was the consul who died in office from 180 BC. Chr. His descendants still bore the cognomen Caesoninus .
Piso is first attested for the year 154 BC. In which he served as praetor and received the province of Hispania ulterior . There he suffered a defeat against the Lusitans . He reached the highest state office in 148 BC. Together with Spurius Postumius Albinus Magnus . At that time Rome was waging the Third Punic War against Carthage . Piso was the commander of the Roman land forces in Africa, but his warfare was criticized for being too weak. In his attempt to conquer various Carthaginian places, he was also beaten several times. The next year the more successful Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus Africanus took his place.
Nothing is known about Piso's further life. He was probably the father of the consul of the same name from 112 BC. Chr.
