Lucius Sergius Paullus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucius Sergius Paullus was a Roman politician living in the 2nd century AD .

An inscription shows that on September 23rd of an indefinite year (probably in the last years of Hadrian's reign ), Paullus was together with Lucius Nonius Calpurnius Torquatus Asprenas suffect consul . Another inscription shows that he also became Praefectus urbi .

From 139 to at least 142 he was governor in the province of Pannonia superior ; by military diplomas he is there for 19 July 139 and 140. Subsequently he became governor of the province of Syria ; it is documented there for the first time on March 19, 144 through military diplomas. Presumably he has already taken over the management of the province in 143. In 168 he was consul for a second time with Lucius Venuleius Apronianus .

In his work De Morte Peregrini, Lukian mentions a governor of the province of Syria who was a lover of philosophy. Galen , too, emphasizes the philosophical interests of Paullus in his writings; He also reports that Paullus visited one of his patients and that he took part in anatomical studies. According to Werner Eck , Paullus is therefore almost certainly the unknown governor of the province of Syria , who is mentioned in Lukian.

Remarks

  1. According to Franziska Beutler, either the year 137 or 138 are most likely.
