Manius Curius Dentatus
Manius Curius Dentatus († 270 BC ) was a Roman consul and military leader . He is best known for his role in ending the Pyrrhic War .
Dentatus came from a plebeian family and, as a tribune, successfully represented the cause of his class against the patrician Interrex Appius Claudius Caecus , who tried to thwart the election of a plebeian consul. As consul, Dentatus ended in 290 BC. The Third Samnite War and subjugated the Sabines . When a part of the conquered land was divided up among the Roman citizens, he took for himself no more than the seven jugera that each citizen received and built his property himself as a simple farmer.
Perhaps as a suffect consul in 284 BC. Dentatus destroyed the Senones and founded the colony Sena Gallica . In 275 BC He became consul for the second (third?) Time. In this consulate he defeated King Pyrrhus in the battle of Beneventum . Also in 274 BC He was consul and successfully fought against the Samnites and Lucanians . 272 BC He became a censor . During this time he began the construction of an aqueduct from the Anio to Rome , which was later called Anio Vetus . The Cascata delle Marmore waterfall near Terni was created by a canal that Dentatus had built to drain off the marshy river Velinus .
