The Senones in Gaul

The Gallic Senones lived in what is now the French departments of Seine-et-Marne , Loiret and Yonne . Its main town was Agendicum (later Senonus , today Sens ).

They were 54 to 51 BC In the battles against Gaius Iulius Caesar and were subdued by this. According to Caesar's account, the Senones settled south of the Belgians on the Seine and Loire .

The Senones in Italy

In the 5th century BC Celtic peoples started moving from what is now France. A group of Senones crossed the Alps and settled together with the Insubrians , Boians and Cenomans in the Po Valley , where they repeatedly defeated the Etruscans . They lived there in the area near Ariminum ( Rimini ) and Ancona .

At the beginning of the 4th century BC Chr. Invaded the northern Italian Senonen under King Brennus ( " UAE Victis! ") In Italy , and had taken 387 v. BC Rome with the exception of the Capitol - the holy geese of Juno are said to have warned the defenders by their chatter - and only withdrew against payment of a ransom . Their participation in the campaign against Rome is controversial, but not their centuries of hostility towards Rome.

In 285 BC They attacked the Etruscan Arretium ( Arezzo ). The Romans rushing to help suffered a defeat. The Senonic chief Britomaris then allied with the Etruscans against the Romans, but the consul Publius Cornelius Dolabella led a strong force into their territories. In 283 BC BC, while the army of the Senones marched on Rome, the Romans occupied their tribal area and deliberately killed women, children and the elderly. Then the Romans defeated the Senonian army and founded the colony Sena Gallica (today Senigallia ) on their territory . The last remaining Senones were immediately expelled from Italy.

The colonization of Italy by Senones could be proven by finds in the burial fields near Montefortino d'Arcevia and in Santa Paolina di Filottrano .
