Decimus Junius Pera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Decimus Junius Pera was a member of the Roman plebeian dynasty of the Junians and was founded in 266 BC. Chr. Consul and 253 BC Chr. Censor .

Life

According to the Fasti Capitolini, Decimus Junius Pera had a father and grandfather of the same name and was therefore the son of Decimus Junius Brutus Pera . So he kept only the latter of his father's two cognomina , Brutus and Pera .

In the (preserved) sources, Decimus Junius Pera is not mentioned until 266 BC. Mentioned when he exercised the consulate together with Numerius Fabius Pictor . Both consuls were allowed to hold two triumphs because of their successful warfare over several peoples , first one over the Sassinates and later another over the Sallentines and Messapians .

264 BC On the occasion of the death of their father, Decimus Junius Pera and his otherwise unknown brother Marcus organized gladiator games for the first time in Rome , which were intended as a special honor for the dead. The assertion of the late ancient Roman poet Ausonius that Thracian or Thracian armed combatants appeared on this occasion is considered unreliable by modern research.

253 BC Decimus Junius Pera exercised the censorship , whereby he was the consul from 262 BC. BC, Lucius Postumius Megellus , received as a colleague; when the latter died during his tenure, Pera had to resign from the censorship office because of this ominous omen.

The son of Decimus Junius Pera, who was no longer mentioned after his censorship, was Marcus Junius Pera , who lived in 230 BC. As consul, 225 BC As censor and 216 BC. Officiated as dictator .
