Appius Annius Gallus (Consul 67)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Appius Annius Gallus was a Roman politician and senator in the 1st century AD

The Appii Annii family was probably from Iguvium or possibly Perusia , Appius Annius Gallus was perhaps the first senator in his family. Under Emperor Nero, he and Lucius Verulanus Severus held a suffect consulate in 67 . In the Year of the Four Emperors 69 Annius Gallus was Emperor Otho Commander of the Army and was moved against the followers of Vitellius , which had invaded Italy. He defended the city of Placentia and advised Otho to postpone the battle against the Vitellians. After the defeat in the First Battle of Bedriacum and the suicide of Othos, Annius Gallus calmed the Othonians who remained in Brixellum .

Annius Gallus survived the turbulent year and was appointed governor ( legatus Augusti pro praetore ) of the province of Germania superior (Upper Germany) shortly after Vespasian came to power in 70 by the regent Gaius Licinius Mucianus . There he went into the field together with his Lower Germanic colleagues Quintus Petillius Cerialis and Aulus Marius Celsus against the rebellious Gauls and Teutons. He may have remained in office until 72/73 when Gnaeus Pinarius Cornelius Clemens succeeded him.

Appius Annius was probably the father of Appius Annius Trebonius Gallus, suffect consul in 108, and grandfather of Annia Regilla , wife of Herodes Atticus .
