Areobindus
Areobindus (also Ariovindus , with full name Flavius Areobindus Dagalaifus Areobindus , ancient Greek Ἀρεόβινδος ; * around 460 ; † after 512 ) was an Eastern Roman politician and general who was proclaimed emperor against Anastasius I for one day in 512 .
Life
Areobindus was the son of Flavius Dagalaifus (consul 461) and Godisthea (a granddaughter of Aspars ) of Gothic - Alanic descent. In his second marriage, he was married to Anicia Iuliana from 479 , a daughter of the Western Roman emperor Olybrius , with whom he had a son also called Olybrius. Dagalaifu's son came from his first marriage.
In 503 Areobindus was appointed magister militum by Emperor Anastasios and entrusted with a command in the flare-up Persian war (allegedly he killed a Persian general in a duel). In 506 he held the consulate .
The serious unrest of the Staurotheis uprising occurred after Anastasios had deposed the strictly Chalcedonian patriarch Macedonios in 511 and appointed Timotheus I instead . The rebels moved to the house of Areobindus in the capital and proclaimed him emperor. Areobindus is said to have hidden from the crowd until the next day and then declared loyal to Anastasios.
The magister militum per Africam of Justinian I and husband of the imperial niece Praejecta , who was murdered in Carthage in 546 in connection with fighting against the Moors at the instigation of the Vandal commander in chief in Numidia , Guntarith , is to be distinguished from Areobindus .
