Manius Manilius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manius Manilius was a Roman politician, general and lawyer of the 2nd century BC. Chr.

He was around 155 BC. BC as praetor governor of the province of Hispania ulterior , where he led unsuccessful campaigns against the Lusitanians . 149 BC He was the first of his family ( homo novus ) to become consul and began the Third Punic War , which developed into a siege of Carthage , but which was only brought to a successful conclusion by his successor Scipio Aemilianus , with whom he became friends. He must be 129 BC BC, because Marcus Tullius Cicero portrays him as one of the participants in his dialogue De re publica .

Manilius was more successful as a lawyer and orator than in his campaigns. Coming from a humble background, he supported Roman citizens in legal proceedings, which particularly concerned trade. A collection of forms he created is occasionally cited by Varro , Cicero and Brutus .
