Kopriwschtiza [ koˈprivʃtit͜sɐ ] ( Bulgarian Копривщица ) is a small town in Bulgaria . The name is derived from the Bulgarian word for nettles ( Bulgarian коприва / [ koˈprivɐ ]), which grow in abundance in this area.
location
The city is located in the Sredna Gora Mountains on the Topolnitsa River ( Bulgarian Тополница ), 111 kilometers east of Sofia .
Public transport
From Koprivshtitsa there are bus connections to Sofia and Plovdiv . The train station is about 9 km outside the city, there is a bus connection from the train station to the city.
history
The Koprivshtitsa area has been inhabited since the end of the 14th century. The village was destroyed several times by bands of robbers (1793, 1804, 1809) and rebuilt by the residents.
The first shot of the April Uprising , the revolt of the Bulgarian population against Ottoman rule, was fired in Koprivshtitsa .
tourism
In the city there are numerous, mostly restored houses from the time of the “Bulgarian Revival” . Numerous museum houses commemorate the heroes of the April Uprising. Koprivshtitsa has been officially a museum city since 1952 and is on the list of 100 national tourist objects .
The Bulgarian National Folklore Festival has been held in Koprivshtitsa every five years since 1965, where thousands of artists perform and artisans exhibit their products.
