Georgi Benkowski ( Bulgarian Георги Бенковски ), born as Gavril Gruew Hlatew (Bulgarian Гаврил Груев Хлътев ; * 1841 in Kopriwschtiza ; † May 12, 1876 at Ribaritsa ), was a Bulgarian revolutionary from April 18 , ideological Bulgarian leader 76 , organizer and Bulgarian revolutionary .

Life

Georgi Benkowski was born as Gawril Gruew Hlatew at the beginning of the 1940s in the Balkan town of Kopriwschtiza, today central Bulgaria, in the merchant family of Grujo Hlatew. Benkowski had two sisters, Kuna and Wasilja. His family was one of the wealthier handicraft and merchant families in the city, but the financial situation worsened after the death of his father. This caused his mother to only let him go to elementary school until the third grade. Instead, she sent the boy Georgi to learn a tailoring trade.

The Benkowski nunatak on Greenwich Island in Antarctica has been named in his honor since 2006 .
