Dragoman ( Bulgarian Драгоман ) is a city in western Bulgaria . The city is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name in Sofia Oblast .

location

Dragoman is located west of the Sofia plain on European route 80 , approx. 40 km northwest of the Bulgarian capital Sofia . Immediately north of the city are the foothills of the Tschepan Mountains , which are part of the southwestern part of the Balkan Mountains , and the Dragoman Lake . Nearby are the cities of Slivnitsa , Godetsch and Tran .

history

The important Roman road Via Militaris (also called Via Diagonalis ) ran through the city in ancient times . In the 8th century the region came under Bulgarian rule. In the 11th century the region became a border area between the Bulgarians and Serbs with alternating rulers to become Ottoman in the 14th century. After the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878, the city became part of the Principality of Bulgaria . During the Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885/86 the city was occupied by Serbian troops. After the decisive battle of Slivnitsa , the city was recaptured on November 10, 1885. The city has given its name to the Dragoman Glacier on Smith Island in Antarctica since 2010 .
