Tran ( Bulgarian Трън , dt. Dorn ) is a city in the far west of Bulgaria . It is located around 60 km northwest of the city center of Sofia in the Pernik Oblast . Tran is the administrative center of a municipality of the same name .

The city was first mentioned as Tran in 1451, but the names Turun, Tuin, Turan and Taran are still known from the 15th and 16th centuries. The river Erma , which flows through the city, forms the Tran Gorge (Bulgarian Трънско ждрело / Transko Schdrelo) in its lower reaches .
The lowest temperature in Bulgaria was measured in Tran at −38.3 ° C in the winter of 1947.
During the Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885/86 the empty city was occupied by Serbian troops of the Morava Division on November 4th jul. / November 16, 1885 greg. occupied. After the decisive battle of Slivnitsa , the city became July 11th . / November 23, 1885 greg. recaptured by the Bulgarian army.
The city is named after the Tran Crag , a nunatak on Livingston Island in Antarctica.
