Kostinbrod ( Bulgarian Костинброд ) is a city in western Bulgaria . The city is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name in Sofia Oblast . Kostinbrod is located in the western part of the Sofia plain on the European route 80 , approx. 10 km northwest of the Bulgarian capital Sofia . The towns of Slivnitsa and Dragoman are nearby .
The place has been known for its mineral springs since ancient times . The strategically important Roman road Via Militaris (also called Via Diagonalis) ran south of Kostinbrod . The post-road station Scretiska (Bulgarian Скретиска) was built here, which supplied the nearby villa of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great . The road led from Constantinople via Serdica (now Sofia) to Naissus . Later, the Byzantine fortress Kratiskara was built here.
In the immediate vicinity of the city is the Schijakowzi monastery (Bulgarian Шияковския манастир ), in which Vasil Levski had founded a revolutionary committee. During socialist times, in the VR Bulgaria , Kostinbrod should be developed into a big city. Therefore, the small village Kostinbrod was merged with the villages Schijakowzi and Maslowo and the population of the mountain villages was relocated to the new town Kostinbrod.
Kostinbrod has been the namesake of the Kostinbrod Pass in the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica since 2011 .
