Gavril Kazarov

Gawril Kazarow ( Bulgarian Гаврил Кацаров , born October 4, 1874 in Kopriwschtiza , † June 1, 1958 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian ancient historian . His research focus was the Thracian and Macedonian history.

Life

Gavriil Kazarow studied Ancient History and Classical Philology at the University of Leipzig , where he in 1899 with a dissertation on the alliance system of the Greek polis Phokis doctorate was ( De foederis Phocensium institutis ). He then deepened his studies at the universities of Berlin and Munich (1901–1902) and stayed in Italy in 1906.

After his return to Bulgaria Kazarow was initially active in the school service. In 1900 he went to the University of Sofia as a lecturer , where he was appointed associate professor in 1904 and full professor in 1910. Until his retirement in 1943 he held the chair of history. From 1915 to 1918 he acted as dean of the Faculty of History and Philology, from 1927 to 1928 as rector of the university. From 1928 to 1929 he was director of the National Archaeological Museum .

In addition to his work in research, teaching and academic self-administration, Kazarow also worked as a science organizer. As a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (since 1909) he founded the Bulgarian Archaeological Institute in 1920 , of which he has been a member since then. In March 1940, after the resignation of Bogdan Filov, he was appointed director of the Archaeological Institute.

Kazarov also enjoyed great recognition abroad. He was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute (since 1922), an external member of the Romanian Academy (since 1936) and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna (since 1939).
