Welisar Welkow

Welisar Iwanow Welkow (common transcription Velisar Ivanov Velkov , Bulgarian Велизар Иванов Велков ; * May 18, 1928 in Sofia , † April 21, 1993 in Sofia) was a Bulgarian archaeologist and historian.

Welisar Welkow, son of the archaeologist Ivan Welkow , studied classical philology at the University of Sofia from 1946 to 1950 , then specialized there in archeology and ancient history and received his doctorate in 1954 with a thesis on villages and cities in Thrace and Dacia in late antiquity . From 1954 Velkov worked at the National Archaeological Institute and Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. From 1972 to 1989 he headed the epigraphy and numismatics department , from 1971 to 1987 he was deputy director, from 1987 to 1993 director of the institute and museum. At the same time he taught Ancient History at Sofia University, since 1961 as an assistant professor, since 1970 as a professor. He also taught from 1964 to 1975 as a professor of ancient and medieval history at the University of Veliko Tarnovo .

He led u. a. Excavations in Sozopol (1949), Nessebar (1958–1980), Ratiaria (1959. 1980–1993) and in the port of Carthage (1973–1974).

He was a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences , of which he was deputy chairman from 1991 to 1993, as well as the German (1973) and Austrian Archaeological Institute (1976). In 1987 he received the Herder Prize .
