Ivan Welkov

Iwan Welkow Iwanow (English transcription Ivan Velkov Ivanov , Bulgarian Иван Велков Иванов ; born May 19, 1881 in Bajlowo , Sofia Oblast , † May 10, 1958 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian archaeologist .

Iwan Welkow studied Ancient History and Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna from 1909 and received his doctorate there in 1915 under Wilhelm Kubitschek . From 1919 to 1937 he was the curator of the Antiquities Department at the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia, from 1938 to 1944 he was the director of the museum. Under his direction, the old museum building was expanded by two wings, and during the bombing raids in 1944 he was responsible for securing the collection.

His main research area was archeology in Thrace , where he carried out numerous excavations.

His son was the archaeologist Welisar Welkow .
