history

The idea of creating a Bulgarian National Museum dates back to the 1840s. The Bulgarian Literary Society has been running such a museum since it was founded in 1869. Initially, the museum started operations as a department of the national library. In 1892 the department became independent. With the edict of Ferdinand I , a national museum was established on January 1, 1893. The museum, which initially began with an antiquities section, a numismatic section and an ethnographic section, was housed in the late 15th century building of the Great Mosque of Sofia . It was officially opened to the public on May 18, 1905. In 1906 the ethnographic collection was spun off as a separate museum. In 1949 the museum was merged with the Bulgarian Archaeological Institute, founded in 1920, and since then has been a museum and research institute as part of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences under the name National Archaeological Institute with Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences .
