Dimtscho Welew Debeljanow ( Bulgarian Димчо Велев Дебелянов ; born April 10, 1887 in Kopriwschtiza ; † October 2, 1916 with Demir Hisar ) was a Bulgarian poet .

Life

He was born the youngest of six children. In 1896, after the death of his father, he moved to live with an older brother in Plovdiv . Here he wrote his first poems, which he burned. In 1904 the family moved to Sofia . In 1906 Debelyanov published the first of his works in a magazine. Further publications followed.

At the end of October 1912 Debelyanov went to the military and was a member of the 22nd Infantry Regiment, stationed in the city of Samokov . In 1914 he was promoted to lieutenant. During the First World War , he was transferred to the front on January 29, 1916. On October 2, 1916, he fell during the Battle of Demir Hisar.

Debelyanov's poetry was initially influenced by French and Russian symbolism . He wrote poetry, described as masterfully, dealing with love and nature.

A museum in memory of Debelyanov and his work was set up in his birthplace. In 1934 the Bulgarian sculptor Ivan Lasarow created a tomb for Dimtscho Debeljanow. In the television show Velikite Balgari , Debelyanov was voted 71st of the greatest Bulgarians by Bulgarian television viewers in 2006. Since 2008 he has given its name to Debelyanov Point , a headland on Robert Island in Antarctica.
