Lucius Salvius Otho Cocceianus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucius Salvius Otho Cocceianus (* around 55 in Ferentium ; † between 83 and 96) was a Roman politician, senator and nephew of the emperor Otho .

Cocceianus came from Ferentium and was the son of Lucius Salvius Otho Titianus , consul in 52 and 69, and the Cocceia. As a boy he experienced the battles of the four-emperor year 69, in which his uncle Otho was defeated by Vitellius and then killed himself. On the day before his death, Otho had Cocceianus called to him and assured him that the victor would spare him, since Otho had done nothing to Vitellius' family. On this occasion, Otho is said to have revealed to his nephew that he later, after the victory, wanted to adopt him and make him co-regent; For the time being, he had failed to do so in order not to endanger him in the event of defeat. In fact, Vitellius spared his predecessor's brother and nephew. Emperor Domitian had Cocceianus killed because he had celebrated Otho's birthday.

The career of Cocceianus is largely unknown. According to an inscription, he was accepted into a college of priests (perhaps the Salii Palatini ) in 63 . In 82 he was a suffect consul .
