Sextus Attius Suburanus Aemilianus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sextus Attius Suburanus Aemilianus was a Roman senator and Praetorian prefect under Emperor Trajan .

Suburanus came from the knighthood . An inscription made his career in front of the Praetorian prefecture known. Accordingly, he was praefectus fabrum , prefect of the Ala Tauriana , assistant to the legatus Augusti pro praetore of the province of Hispania citerior in holding the census, assistant to a praefectus annonae and prefect of Egypt, procurator Augusti ad Mercurium , procurator Augusti Alpium Cottianarum et Pedatium Tyriorum et et Lepontiorum and procurator of the provinces of Iudaea and Belgica .

Around the year 99, Suburanus succeeded Casperius Aelianus , who had rebelled against Emperor Nerva in 97 and was therefore executed by the new Emperor Trajan a year later. In his eulogy for Trajan, Pliny the Younger reports on the relationship of trust between the emperor and Suburanus. Trajan gave him his sword with the words: “Take this sword and use it for me, if I rule well; otherwise against me. ”The news of the handing over of the sword can also be found with the later authors Cassius Dio and Aurelius Victor .

Suburanus accompanied Trajan during his inspection trips as comes . He was admitted to the Senate and served twice as consulate . By military diplomas that are dated March 13, 101, is evidence that 101 Suffektkonsul was; he succeeded Trajan, who had resigned as an ordinary consul and exercised this office together with Quintus Articuleius Paetus . In 104, together with Marcus Asinius, Marcellus was the full consul.
