Gaius Claudius Canina
Gaius Claudius Canina was a Roman statesman in the first third of the 3rd century BC. Chr.
According to the consular fasts , he was the son of a Marcus and grandson of a Gaius . Its cognomen sets it apart from the other branches of the branched gens Claudia ; but because of the filiation of the same name he could be a brother of the consul of 287 BC. BC, Marcus Claudius Marcellus .
His first consulate, from which no events have been recorded, he reached with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus in the year 285 BC. For the second time he was 273 BC. BC together with Gaius Fabius Licinus consul and triumphed on February 17, 272 BC. About Lucanians , Samnites and probably Bruttier . In 273 the colonies of Cosa and Paestum were founded; in addition, Ptolemaic ambassadors came to Rome to make friendship ( amicitia ).
Nothing is known about Canina's further life or descendants. The military tribune Gaius Claudius , who died in 264 BC. Chr. Messana and so triggered the First Punic War could have been his son.
