Michel Christol

Michel Christol (born October 25, 1942 in Castelnau-de-Guers ) is an important French ancient historian and epigraphist .

Christol was born in Castelnau-de-Guers in the Hérault department , attended high school in Béziers and studied at the University of Montpellier . His academic teachers included the classical scholars Hans-Georg Pflaum and André Chastagnol . 1964 followed the agrégation in the subject of history, after which he was in school for three years and taught at the Lycée Alphonse Daudet in Nîmes . Then Michel Christol was employed from 1967 as a scientific assistant to Claude Nicolet at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (until 1968 University of Paris ), later he was " Maître -assistant" there. In 1981 Chastagnol did his doctorate at the Sorbonne, the extensive dissertation with the title "L'état romain et la crise de l'Empire sous le règne des empereurs Valerien et Gallien (253-268)" ("The Roman State and the crisis of the empire under the rule of the emperors Valerian and Gallienus (253-268) ”remained unpublished. A partial result of the work, a prosopographical study on the development of the careers of Roman senators in the second half of the 3rd century, was published in 1986 under the title “Essai sur l'evolution des carrières sénatoriales dans la 2 e moitié du III e s. ap. J.-C. ”published.

From 1983 until his retirement in 2008, he taught, also at the University of Paris 1, as a professor of Roman history. From 1983 to 1985 Christol was President of the Société française de numismatique (French Numismatic Society) , and from 1990 to 1994 he was the editor-in-chief of Gallia magazine . From 1989 to 2000 he was director of the university publishing house “Publications de la Sorbonne”. At the Center Gustave-Glotz he is a member of the Unité mixte de recherche (“joint research center”) 8210 “ Anthropologie et Histoire des Mondes Antiques ” (“Anthropology and history of the ancient world”). On January 9, 2015, he was accepted as a non-resident (i.e. not living on site) full member of the Académie de Nîmes .

Michel Christol's areas of expertise are the political history of the Roman Empire, especially the " Imperial Crisis of the 3rd Century ", as well as the history of the Roman provinces, especially the African and Asia Minor provinces as well as southern France. His main focus is on Latin epigraphy and numismatics as well as prosopographical questions. He published various coins and inscriptions from the ancient city of Nemausus, today's Nîmes .

Christol is married and has two daughters.
