Gaius Claudius Marcellus (Consul 50 BC)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Claudius Marcellus (* no later than 93 BC; † early 40 BC ) was a Roman politician of the late Republic and one of the consuls of 50 BC. Chr.

Like the consul of the previous year, Marcus Claudius Marcellus , who was related to him , he was an opponent of Gaius Julius Caesar and carried out his recall from the governorship in Gaul . Towards the end of his consulate, Marcellus handed over two legions to Pompey, who was to be the general of the Senate against Caesar .

When the civil war broke out , Marcellus stayed in Italy and went to Caesar, with whose great niece Octavia Minor he had been since about 55 BC. Was married; but he was no longer politically active. After Caesar's death, he supported Octavia's brother, who later became Emperor Augustus , in his struggle for rule.

Marcellus should not be confused with his eponymous cousin , the consul of the year 49 BC. Chr.
