from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Antius Aulus Iulius Quadratus was a Roman politician and senator . In the military diplomas his name is given as Gaius Antius Iulius Quadratus .

Quadratus came from a very wealthy family from Pergamon , who could trace their origins back to the Attalid kings of the city as well as to leaders of the Galatian tribes. Around 73/74 he was accepted by Emperor Vespasian under the Praetorians and thus in the Senate. Under Emperor Domitian (but before 84), Quadratus legatus iuridicus ( presiding judge). Around 84/85 he became proconsul in the province of Creta et Cyrene . From 89/90 to about 92/93 he was the legate of Lycia et Pamphylia . Military diplomas show that he was a suffect consul with Marcus Lollius Paullinus Valerius Asiaticus Saturninus in 94 . After that he was governor of Syria from 100/101 to 103/104 at the latest . Further military diplomas show that he was full consul with Tiberius Iulius Candidus Marius Celsus in 105 . Finally, in the year of office 109/110, the proconsulate in the province of Asia followed .

Quadratus was a friend of the Emperor Trajan and from the year 100 also belonged to the Arval Brotherhood . In Pergamon he was the priest of the god Dionysus Kathegemon . In doing so, he consciously tied in with the Attalid kings of the city, whose prerogative this title had originally been. He also donated an agon in his hometown of Pergamon in honor of Trajan. There, but also in Ephesus , numerous statues of honor were erected for him.

Presumably he was related to Gaius Iulius Quadratus Bassus , suffect consul in 105.
