Publius Aelius Ligus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publius Aelius Ligus was a Roman statesman in the first half of the 2nd century BC. Chr.

Probably in the year 175 BC. BC Praetor , three years later he reached the consulate in which he had Liguria as his official area , from where he probably got his cognomen . The consulate was remarkable because it and his colleague Gaius Popillius Laenas were the first plebeians to run the office together. The entire year in office was marked by the dispute with the Senate , as his colleague blocked a Senate decision concerning the behavior of his brother Marcus Popillius Laenas against the Ligurians from the previous year, and Aelius joined this. In 167 BC Together with Gnaeus Baebius Tamphilus , Gaius Cicereius , Publius Terentius Tuscivicanus and Publius Manilius (perhaps father of the consul of the same name from 120 BC) , Aelius was a member of a five-person commission that was supposed to arrange the situation in Illyria with the praetor Lucius Anicius Gallus .

Unlike the Aelii Paeti and the Aelii Tuberones, this line of the Aelians sank again into insignificance. A descendant can be seen in the tribune Aelius Ligus , who 58 BC. Agitated against Marcus Tullius Cicero with Publius Clodius Pulcher .
