Marcus Aurelius Cotta
Marcus Aurelius Cotta was a politician and military leader of the late Roman Republic .
The brother of Gaius and Lucius Aurelius Cotta ( consuls 75 and 65 BC, respectively) fought perhaps around 80 BC. Unsuccessful as a propaetor against Quintus Sertorius . 74 BC Marcus Aurelius Cotta was himself consul and, like his colleague Lucius Licinius Lucullus , took command in the east of the empire against Mithridates VI . Cotta received the newly established province of Bithynia , which he was supposed to protect against Mithridates with a fleet. After a defeat he had to retreat to Chalcedon until he was appalled by Lucullus. In the following year he operated as proconsul on the Pontic coast and began the siege of Herakleia Pontike , which he did not do until two years later, in 71 BC. BC, could complete. The following year Cotta returned to Rome and was born around 67 BC. BC by the tribune Gaius Papirius Carbo accused of having embezzled booty during the conquest of Herakleias. Cotta was convicted and expelled from the Senate.
