Aulus Atilius Caiatinus (possibly Calatinus ) was a Roman politician and senator of the 3rd century BC. Chr.

Caiatinus came from the plebeian gens Atilia and was the son of Aulus Atilius Calatinus , who was accused of betraying the city of Sora in the Samnite Wars . He was saved from conviction by a declaration of honor from his father-in-law, Quintus Fabius Maximus Rullianus . Consequently, Caiatinus was the grandson of Fabius Rullianus on his mother's side.

Caiatinus became consul in 258 BC. BC, celebrated a triumphal procession as praetor in 257 BC. BC, was 254 BC. Re-elected consul and censor in 247 BC. Chr.

Together with Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Asina , he conquered in 254 BC. Chr. Panormus , but only Asina was awarded the triumph. 249 BC After the devastating sea defeat of Publius Claudius Pulcher and Lucius Junius Pullus (Pulcher was sentenced to a fine of 120,000 aces , his colleague committed suicide, so that both consuls were unsuitable for further command), Caiatinus was elected dictator . He led an army to Sicily (becoming the first dictator to lead an army outside mainland Italy). He dedicated a temple to Spes , the personification of the hope and security of youth, on the Forum Holitorium, the vegetable market whose borders were the Capitol in the north, the Tiber in the south, the Servian Wall in the west and the Forum Boarium (cattle market) in the east , as well as Fides , the personification of good faith, whose symbol is a pair of imposed hands as a sign of agreement, on the Capitol .
