Victor Ostrovsky ( Hebrew ויקטור אוסטרובסקי Viktor Ostrowski ; *  November 28, 1949 in Edmonton , Canada ) is a former agent of the Israeli secret service Mossad and author who became known as a writer in Canada, the United States and in German-speaking countries.

resume

Victor Ostrovsky is the son of an Israeli and a Canadian of Jewish descent . He spent his youth in Israel and became the youngest officer in the Israel Defense Forces when he was 18 . Initially active in the naval intelligence service of the Israeli Navy , he was recruited by the Mossad in the early 1980s .

He worked for this service for four years, most recently as a command officer for foreign agents. In early 1986, the Mossad forced the landing of a Libyan Gulfstream II aircraft on suspicion that leading terrorists were on board. The operation failed, Ostrovsky was held responsible for the failure and persuaded to retire. He escaped being drafted into the Israeli army; he returned to Canada with stops in London and the United States .

Journalistic activity

Ostrovsky's books deal with reports on Mossad actions such as Operation Sphinx , the destruction of the Osirak nuclear test reactor in southern Iraq in June 1981 by Israeli warplanes .

Together with the Canadian journalist Claire Hoy (* 1940) he wrote a book about his service with the Mossad, By Way of Deception (German title: Der Mossad ). In the fall of 1990, the Israeli government issued an injunction prohibiting publication of the book in the United States . In this book he also established the term sayanim as a sleeper agent or Palestinian informant for Israel.

In his second book, Mossad Secret Files (original title: The Other Side of Deception ), Ostrovsky speaks of break-ins at American aircraft manufacturers , a defamation campaign against the former Wehrmacht officer and then UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, and in particular of the Mossad's involvement in the Barschel Affair . The Zurich toxicologist Hans Brandenberger compared Ostrovsky's information on Uwe Barschel's death with the chemical data in the reports he had prepared after the autopsy of Barschel's body. Brandenberger explained to Welt am Sonntag 2010 that, in contrast to other confessors' statements, "Ostrovsky describes a scenario that agrees surprisingly well with the analysis data"; Conspicuous details in Ostrovsky's report, for example the rectal administration of sedatives and the strategically applied, staggered administration of drugs, were precisely reflected in the chemical findings. On the other hand, it was pointed out that Ostrovsky might have had access to Brandenberger's 1994 report when writing his book. Investigative journalist Hans Leyendecker also saw no change in the situation and therefore still considers the Barschel case to be unsolved. As early as December 22, 1994, the Lübeck public prosecutor had listed a number of reasons why Ostrovsky's report did not agree with the facts known to it. Tobias Jaecker described the book as exemplary for the belief of many (often anti-Semitic ) conspiracy theorists that the Mossad is behind all unexplained events. The political scientist Matthew Gray ruled that the book THAT CONDITION of tone and accusations at times as if it was itself "a case conspiracy theory paranoia" ( English a tone and allegations did make it seem, at times, the book is Actually itself a case of conspiracist paranoia ).

He also published two novels, Lion of Judah (German title: In the service of the Mossad ) and Black Ghosts , which also make reference to his intelligence experience.
