Quintus Veranius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quintus Veranius († 58 ) was a Roman politician and senator of the 1st century AD.

Veranius was the son of a homo novus of the same name , who had a closer relationship with Germanicus , accompanied him to the east as a comes and was appointed first governor of the province of Cappadocia .

In January 41, Veranius played an important role as tribune of the people when, together with his colleague Brocchus, he did not prevent Claudius from taking power, although the two had been instructed by the Senate to do so. After his legacy in the province of Lycia et Pamphylia in 47/48, Veranius was honored several times by Claudius because of his good work: he was appointed full consul for the year 49, accepted into the college of augurs , who were among the most important Roman priests counted, and possibly also awarded the ornamenta triumphalia . In addition, Veranius was accepted into the patrician class by Claudius in 48, along with several other senators, whose ancestors had made a special contribution, according to Tacitus .

An inscription shows that he took part in Nero's festival before he was elected in the province of Britain in 57. Before he could finish his mission in Britain, Veranius died - probably in 58.

Veranius had at least two daughters, the twins Octavilla and Verania Gemina. Verania married Lucius Calpurnius Piso Frugi Licinianus , who was adopted by Galba in 69 and made his successor.
