Lucius Junius Gallio Annaeanus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lucius Iunius Gallio Annaeanus († 65 ) was a Roman politician in the first half of the 1st century.

His birth name was Lucius Annaeus Novatus, he was the eldest son of Annaeus Seneca (Seneca the Elder) and thus an older brother of Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Seneca the Younger) and Annaeus Mela, the father of the poet Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (Lucan). He was adopted by Senator Iunius Gallio, which led to the name being changed.

Gallio was a senator, quaestor and prefect . Pliny the Elder describes him as having a lung condition. His brother Seneca dedicated de ira and de vita beata to him . As proconsul of the province of Achaea 51/52 (this is evidenced by an inscription found in Delphi ) Gallio had contact with Paulus of Tarsus ( Acts 18,12-17  EU ). In 56 he was a suffect consul . When he faced execution in 65, he committed suicide.
