Events
- Roman Empire : Gnaeus Sentius Saturninus becomes full consul with Emperor Caligula . After the assassination of Caligula, he tried to restore the republic together with Quintus Pomponius Secundus , who succeeded the emperor as suffect consul .
- January 24th : Emperor Caligula , like his fourth wife Milonia Caesonia and their one-year-old daughter Iulia Drusilla, is murdered by the Praetorian Guard under the leadership of the officer Cassius Chaerea . His uncle Claudius was made his successor by the Praetorians the next day and received the usual rights of the princeps with the tribunicia potestas and the imperium proconsulare immediately after assuming power. Caligula, hated by the Senate , is not subjected to the damnatio memoriae , but statues are occasionally destroyed and Claudius has almost all government measures of his predecessor declared invalid.
