Tashfin ibn Ali

Tashfin ibn Ali ( Arabic تاشفين بن علي, DMG Tāšfīn b. ʿAlī ; † March 23, 1145 ) was ruler of the Almoravids (1143–1145).

Tashfin ibn Ali was appointed governor of Granada in 1128 by his father Ali ibn Yusuf (1106–1143) . As he proved to be a capable military leader, ten years later his father ordered him back to Marrakech to support the Almohads . After the death of Ali ibn Yusuf, Tashfin ibn Ali took over the leadership of the Almoravids . In order to be able to stop the strengthening Almohads in northern Morocco, the troops had to be withdrawn from Al-Andalus , which was also shaken by revolts against the rule of the Almoravids.

Nevertheless, the decline of the empire could no longer be stopped. When the mercenary leader Reverter fell in battle in 1144, the Christian mercenaries defected to the Almohads under Abd al-Moomin . This finally won the upper hand and defeated Tashfin ibn Ali in 1145 at Oran . Tashfin ibn Ali died shortly afterwards. He was first his son Ibrahim (1145), then his brother Ishaq (1146–1147).
