Yusuf II , Arabic المستنصر بالله يوسف بن الناصر, DMG al-Mustanṣir bi-llāh Yūsuf b. an-Nāṣir , (* 1197 ; † 1224 ) was the sixth caliph of the Almohads (1213-1224).

Life

The decline of the Almohad Empire began with Abu Yaqub Yusuf II. Al-Mustansir, the son of Muhammad an-Nasir (1199–1213) . It was largely ruled by the tribal leaders, with much disagreement among them. However, an armistice was initially concluded with Aragon and Castile . Portugal nevertheless took advantage of the weakness of the Almohads and conquered Setubal.

In the Maghreb , too , the dissolution of the empire became clear. In addition to the ongoing battles with the Banu Ghanija under Yahya in Ifrīqiya , the Merinids / Banu Marin also made themselves independent in Morocco . Although an attack on Fez (1217) could be repulsed, control over the distant provinces was increasingly lost.

Yusuf II. Al-Mustansir died in 1224. After violent power struggles among the Almohad tribal leaders, in which his successors Abd al-Wahid al-Makhlu (1224) and Abdallah al-Adil (1224–1227) were overthrown, Idris I. al -Mamun (1227–1232) as the new caliph of the Almohads.
