Piano trio op.38 (Beethoven)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Piano Trio op. 38 ("Grand Trio") in E flat major is a chamber music composition by Ludwig van Beethoven for piano, clarinet / violin and violoncello.

Emergence

The piano trio is based on Beethoven's 1799 septet in E flat major, Op. 20 , which the composer arranged as a piano trio shortly after its creation. The piano trio was not published until after 1807. He dedicated this trio to his doctor Johann Adam Schmidt .

To the music

In the course of the revision, Beethoven adapted the string section of the septet for the piano; the violin part is taken over by the right hand.

As is the case in Beethoven's Piano Trio in B flat major, Op. 11 , the “Gassenhauer Trio”, the violin part of Op. 38 can also be played with the clarinet. In fact, the clarinet part has undergone the fewest changes during the arrangement. Musicologist Eberhard Enß suspected that Beethoven might have arranged the septet for a particular clarinetist.

On the other hand, the cello part, which now also takes on the functions of the other voices, has been significantly changed compared to the septet.
